U.S. Dollars are widely accepted and even preferred in this region of Mexico. It is not necessary to exchange your currency to Mexican Pesos. When making a purchase, you should always ask if the vendor can return your change in U.S. Dollars in order to avoid confusion and prevent having to pay exchange fees to convert back to U.S. currency later.
ATMs are available in some areas but will dispense money in Mexican Pesos and there may be usage fees in addition to your own bank's fees. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted and will provide the best exchange rate. American Express is rarely accepted.
